Eddie Izzard: Marathon Man…

After discussing this with whogal yesterday I thought I should give everyone a little information to explain exactly what we were talking abut, so here it is…..

In the summer of 2009 Eddie Izzard kicked off the fund raising for the 2010 Sport Relief event in rather spectacular style.

Eddie, a comedian in his late forties, who had never run for more than a bus before, set himself a goal even seasoned runners would have considered slightly insane. He would run 43 marathons in just 51 days, on a route that would take him right around the UK.

After training for just 5 weeks he set off from Trafalger Square in London running through England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, before arriving back where he started seven weeks later on 15 September 2009.

So far his efforts have raised over £300,000 for the charity, and earned him a special award as part of the 2009 sports Personality of the Year show. For more information about his challenge, links to the shows on BBC iplayer charting his progress during it and information about what others are doing for Sport Relief, please visit the BBC’s website

  1. Hi! Yep, Eddie IS probably certifiable, but he’s certainly brave…

I believe he eventually managed to raise over £1M by himself! What a guy.

Mind you, my friend’s about to run 3 marathons in 3 days (has he learned NOTHING from Eddie’s exploits?!) for MacMillan Cancer Support, so the madness does have a method (to totally misquote Shakespeare!)
